How large does hail have to be to cause storm damage to a roof? Well, it’s not quite as simple as size. Hail is defined as particles of ice that commonly fall along with rain. The particle size varies but to be considered hailstones it must be greater or equal to –0.2 inches. According to the National Weather Service, severe hail measures 1 inch or larger.

The 1 inch is the all-important number because it determines if the storm will make news for weather reports. However, hailstones measuring less than 1 inch can still destroy property. To some infrastructures hail larger than 1 inch may not cause tremendous damage. In some part of the US, weather reports will consider ½ inch as severe hail storm while others will not consider it to be severe, until the size is 1 inch or larger.

The intensity, direction, and wind speed can greatly vary during a hailstorm. Any changes in wind conditions can greatly affect the force of hailstones when it hits land. Hailstone size is one of the most important factors in assessing the damage to properties. The size of hailstones can be as small as a pea or as big as a softball. When they hit land, most of them have rough edges which add up to the damage it creates. Also, hailstorms lasting for several hours can produce devastating damage even in smaller size hailstones.

  • The density and consistency of hailstones. Sludgy hail may not cause enormous damage, but more concentrated hailstorms are enough to create cracks in roofs.
  • The angle and wind speed at which hail may hit land can add to the damage. In an angle and at great speed, it can break windows and ruin metal gutters. Wind speed increases the damage caused by hailstorms.
  • The concentration of hail plays the biggest factor in producing roof damage. Even pea-sized hailstones can create damage to roof shingles if thrashed for hours during hailstorms.
